What is Coolsculpting?

CoolSculpting®is FDA-cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and submandibular (under the jawline) areas, thigh, abdomen, and flank, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll), and upper arm. It is also FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with submental area treatments. CoolSculpting®  is not a treatment for weight loss.

Who is a candidate?

1. You're in good general health. 2. You're not pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant. 3. You're near your target weight. 4. You're not interested in liposuction. 5. You're looking to treat stubborn pockets of fat.

What is recovery like?

During the procedure you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations lessen as the area becomes numb. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity, and sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental or submandibular area treatment.

Rare side effects may happen in 1 to 10 out of 10,000 CoolSculpting® and CoolSculpting® Elite treatments (between 0.01% to 0.1%). One such rare side effect is a visible enlargement in the treated area, which may develop 2 to 5 months after treatment, will not resolve on its own, and may require surgical intervention for correction.

How long will results last?

Scientists have been gathering information about CoolSculpting patients for years. In 2016, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology published one study titled “Long-term efficacy follow‐up on two cryolipolysis case studies: 6 and 9 years post-treatment.”  The longitudinal study covered patients who received the CoolSculpting procedure on the left flank, or love handle, and did not have any procedure on the right flank. This provided researchers with a control flank. After nearly a decade of time after a single CoolSculpting treatment, the researchers found that “Local reductions in flank fat have significant longevity in these subjects and suggest that results from cryolipolysis may be very long-lasting.”
