As you age and your weight shifts, your arms may develop a saggy appearance. All the biceps curls and triceps extensions you can do won’t remove the extra skin and fat pockets in the arms. Consult Christopher Jones, MD, PC, to see if you’re a candidate for brachioplasty.

What results can I expect from a brachioplasty?

An upper-arm lift, medically known as a brachioplasty, tightens the area that droops downward, particularly on the underside of the arm. The reduction in excess skin gives a natural, tighter, and smoother look to your arms. A brachioplasty also addresses the underlying tissue that provides support for your skin, so that you have a naturally defined shape. Any localized pockets of fat in the region may also be removed.

Who is a candidate for an upper-arm lift?

Dr. Jones can work with most skin types and body shapes. If you’ve recently lost a significant amount of weight, with bariatric surgery or other means, you’ll definitely benefit from an arm lift.

If you’ve tried for years to slim the area with exercise to no avail, talk to Dr. Jones about what results you can expect from the surgery. You do need to be at a relatively stable weight or near your goal weight.

Your overall health must be good to allow you to heal after surgery. An ongoing smoking habit will disqualify a patient for brachioplasty.

What can I expect during and after an upper-arm lift?

The surgery requires general anesthesia. An incision is made from the armpit to the elbow on the inner aspect of the arm. Often, Dr. Jones will remove excess in the armpit and down the side of the chest as well if the patient so desires. The tissue layers are tightened individually with dissolving sutures. The skin is closed with dissolvable sutures as well.

What is recovery like after an upper-arm lift?

Your arms will be wrapped to reduce swelling. You will not have drains. You may shower or bathe the next day. The wounds are not very painful. Dr. Jones and his staff will teach you how to massage your scars at your first postoperative visit.

Is an upper-arm lift right for me?

An upper-arm lift is one of the best solutions for helping both men and women tone and tightens one of the most problematic areas. This customized procedure might be right for you if:

  • You’re generally healthy
  • Your skin is firm and elastic
  • You have sagging skin or fat buildup that’s resistant to diet and exercise

Your upper-arm lift can also help give you a boost in confidence by giving you the more defined arms you deserve.

Do upper-arm lift scars fade?

Yes. Dr. Jones has extensive training and experience in cosmetic procedures and ensures you’re left with little scarring after your upper-arm lift. Of course, as with any surgery, it’s normal to have some slightly visible scarring afterward.

But because Dr. Jones places your incisions in the most discreet areas underneath your arms, they’re barely visible. Plus, Dr. Jones counsels you on how to care for your scars at home, so they heal and fade as much as possible.

Will I need liposuction with an upper-arm lift?

It depends. Dr. Jones may recommend performing liposuction during your upper-arm lift procedure if you have fatty deposits on your triceps that tug your skin down, or have fat building up around your armpits. He can use liposuction to remove the excess fat and then perform your brachioplasty for optimal results.

How long does it take to fully recover from an upper-arm lift?

It’s normal to have some pain and inflammation in your upper arms for several weeks after surgery. Until your incisions fully heal, which can take up to 3-4 weeks, Dr. Jones may recommend avoiding lifting your arms up over your head or performing strenuous activities.

Usually, you can return to most of your normal activities, including exercise, in about two months. For more complex procedures though, you might need to wait a little longer to return to exercise or lifting heavy weight.
